The Couples who are intending to marry in the Catholic Church are required to notify their priest at least a minimum of 6 months before if not more of their intention.
PREPARATION PROGRAMS
The joyous couple are also required to attend the mandatory pre-Marriage Sacramental sessions with their celebrant priest. Every couple should undertake one of these courses provided by the Catholic Church. Contact Catholic Marriage and Fertility Services on cmfs.org.au to make a booking. It is ideal that all couples complete their marriage preparation courses at least 4 months before the wedding, so that this gives the couple sufficient time to resolve any concerns.
MARRIAGE PAPERS/DOCUMENTS
The Marriage Act 1961 sets out the documents required for establishing place, date of birth and identity.
- Baptism Certificate (at least 6 months old)
- an official (original) certificate of birth (not the extract)
- a passport issued by the Australian government or a government of an overseas country showing the date and place of birth of the party.
- You will also need to provide photo documentation to establish your identity. The following are acceptable:
- a driver’s licence
- a proof of age/photo card
- an Australian or overseas passport, or
- a Certificate of Australian Citizenship along with another form of photographic evidence (such as a student card or other photo identification not listed above).
